Although I feel a little guilty identifying with this quote, I find comfort in knowing that when I feel that way every now and then, I’m not alone. As much as I love being a mom, I cherish my breaks from mommy-ing. Whether it’s a Zumba or kickboxing class at the gym, a couple of hours to bead a necklace, or a date night at home with my husband, those moments when I’m just focusing on relaxing and enjoying myself rejuvenate me. Sometimes, taking a break from all the trying so hard is all the effort I need to become a better mom and a better me.
My sister is in town this weekend, and we have lots of plans for good old-fashioned girls’ time. As the baby just went down for the night, I have the perfect thing to kick off this Friday evening. I mentioned earlier this week, that I’ve been making a concentrated effort to eat more fruits and veggies. This week, I’ve been pretty good about washing and cutting fruit before I put it in the refrigerator, and I’ve had a pretty colorful last few days as a result. As the week comes to a close, I have some watermelon, cantaloupe, and blueberries that are on their last days. As I’ve mentioned before, I am so very terrible at following recipes. I think the main problem is I decide to make things on the spot (instead of before I go to the grocery store.) What happens is in lieu of writing up a shopping list and buying the makings of a recipe, I just use the ingredients I have, omit the ones in the recipe that I don’t, and then substitute the closest things I can find. Honestly, I would say my success-to-failure ratio is about 30: 70. Not too bad, considering my tendency not to follow directions.
Anyway, so, as far as the recipe link above goes, I give the author the full credit she deserves. (And, I should mention her blog has many more fantastic-looking recipes in case you want to take a peak). Yes, her recipe was my inspiration. And, I imagine her recipe, well-executed may be better than my recipe. So, you may want to try hers instead of mine. Either way, here’s how I did it with the ingredients I had on hand:
Melon Martinis for Two
1.5 oz of vodka (I used my personal favorite—Grey Goose)
2 cups watermelon OR cantaloupe (I bet honeydew would work too!)
Some fruit in a contrasting color for a garnish (I used lime slices and a few blueberries)
- Blend melon in a food processor or blender until completely pureed.
- Dump into a cocktail shaker with some ice cubes and the vodka.
- Shake it up.
- Strain into a martini glass and garnish with something colorful.
Note: there is a definite melon-y texture to this drink. In fact, I had to finish the cantaloupe with a spoon (which I liked.) If you want to make it virgin, I imagine you don’t really need to add anything—just take out the alcohol.
